Your first week: the personnummer sprint
The ten digits that unlock Swedish life — and how to get them without losing a month to paperwork.
If Sweden has a single key, it's the personnummer. Bank account, doctor's appointment, gym membership, phone contract — every door checks for those ten digits first.
The order of operations
Book a visit at Skatteverket as soon as you land (some offices take walk-ins, the queues say book ahead). Bring your passport, your residence permit or proof of EU right of residence, and your rental contract if you have one. Registration — folkbokföring — usually takes two to four weeks to come through.
While you wait
You can still do a lot: open a "limited" bank account at some banks, get a prepaid SIM, and join the housing queue (it only needs an email). The day the number arrives, upgrade everything: full bank account, BankID, 1177 healthcare login. That last one matters more than people expect.
