Housing

First-hand, second-hand, the mythical queue. How Swedes actually find apartments — and how you will.

Swedish housing has its own vocabulary. A förstahandskontrakt is a first-hand rental contract — the golden ticket. A andrahandskontrakt means you rent from a tenant or owner, usually for a year at a time. Most newcomers start second-hand.

The queue is real

Municipal housing queues (like Bostadsförmedlingen in Stockholm) allocate first-hand contracts by waiting time — often 5–15 years in the capital. It costs almost nothing to join, so register the day you decide to move, even if you're years away.

While you wait

Second-hand rentals are found on Blocket Bostad, Qasa and HomeQ. Watch for scams: never pay before a contract is signed and you've seen the flat (or had someone see it for you). Buying is also common — Swedes buy early, and bostadsrätt apartments are the standard form of ownership.
